Opera della Luna Musical Theatre workshop

Thursday 15th May 2014

On Thursday 15th May, Moorside High School were lucky enough to be visited by the Director and Choreographer for the Musical Theatre company Opera della Luna. Jeff Clarke and Graeme Henderson came in and worked with 30 budding KS3 performers in a workshop centred on their upcoming show at The Lowry, ‘The Gondoliers.’

Opera della Luna Musical Theatre workshop

We began with a warm up, in which we experienced all of the bizarre and wonderful ways that professional performers prepare to go on stage. ‘Big face, little face’ was a particular favourite! Choreographer Graeme explained that it is always guaranteed to crack a smile as well as warm up the face muscles for singing and projecting your voice! Once we were all warmed up, Director Jeff ran an activity using movement to create a character and these characters were then used in a short piece of choreographed movement where the ‘Gondoliers’ took the ‘Ladies of Venice,’ on a short trip down the canal. Mime, facial expressions, body language, timing and proxemics were all important factors in this piece and both Jeff and Graeme were very impressed with the final pieces. Finally, we were taught a dance piece from the show. It was an exciting and upbeat Spanish numbers with lots of twisting, twirling, foot stamping and clicking! We gave it our all; with attitude, arrogance and even someone falling on the floor as she was putting so much effort in! A lot of fun and laughter was had by all.

This was a fantastic opportunity for the students to work with a professional theatre company and experience something new. Some students walked out of the workshop certain that this is the career for them. Others had decided that Musical Theatre was not quite their style! What we are sure of though, is that all of the students had an afternoon full of fun and laughter which they are not likely to forget in a hurry!
