Design & Technology

Head of Department Mrs A Sargent

Design & Technology students at Moorside High School will be using an iterative design approach to widen their understanding of a variety of materials and manufacturing processes through a series of design and make projects. They will develop an awareness of the current social and environmental impacts that Design and Technology has during the entire product lifecycle.

This means they will learn about types, sources and properties of a variety of materials, which is carried out via application. Students will learn a range of processes used to manufacture products as scale models or working prototypes, applying investigation strategies to inform the development of their designs. Innovative design strategies will be adopted to ensure their product is fit for purpose. This will develop analytical and evaluative skills and be promote confidence to self-reflect, which leads to further exploration of ideas. This supports understanding how to identify and fulfil client needs to ensure a successful and marketable product. The students will have a grounding in the specialised technical tools, processes and techniques needed to fully achieve in their chosen fields in KS4. They will also explore design concepts throughout all years, enhancing problem solving abilities through critical thinking and various other approaches.

Within the Design and Technology rotation, students will study Cooking and Nutrition which will equip students with the knowledge, understanding and skills required to cook and apply the principles of food science, nutrition and healthy eating. Food is a vital part of our daily lives and is essential for life. As our students become adults and have busy lives, it is easy to choose food, which has been ready, prepared. However, it is more nutritious and often cheaper to cook simple, delicious food. At Moorside High School, students will develop their knowledge and understanding of nutrition, healthy eating, food preparation, hygiene, cooking techniques, and sensory characteristics.  Our curriculum will encourage students to cook and enable them to make informed decisions about a wide range of further learning opportunities and career pathways as well as develop vital life skills that enable them to feed themselves and others affordably and nutritiously, now and later in life. Students will develop basic culinary skills as well as a basic understanding of nutrition and healthy eating principles so that they can build confidence when working in the kitchen to design, prepare and make a range of well-balanced food products using basic catering equipment in a safe and hygienic way. All students will be given opportunities at KS3 to develop the key skills and principles of Food Preparation and Nutrition highlighted in SOW, enabling them to think, communicate and innovate like a designer and instilling the imperative knowledge and skills to enable them to access and thrive in the KS4 curriculum and beyond.

Each school year is structured in a carousel approach, whereby all students will be taught by specialised teachers who fully understand the requirements of their field and will teach and differentiate in a way that is best suited to each individual learner. All KS3 students are provided with a 2 lessons of  D&T weekly. Through the KS3 curriculum students develop skills in all areas of the design process. It is a subject that is inspiring, rigorous and practical preparing all young people to value the world they live and work in, one that considers sustainable designing a making. They are taught to consider real problems and how the iterative design process can help them in analysing, researching, designing, modelling, developing and evaluating possible solutions to problems – whilst also developing independent learning as well as group work. Throughout KS3, students will be challenged with a range of designing and making tasks that use a variety of techniques, materials and processes, as well as a range of materials, tools and equipment including CAD and CAM. In addition to this, DT students are given frequent opportunities to discuss wider issues, such as technological development, sustainability and responsibilities of designers and manufacturers.

Design and Technology is a subject that we believe is a life skill – relevant to whatever the students do later in life. The carousel consists of Cooking and nutrition; Graphic design; Textiles; Engineering and Product Design. This breadth of subjects will enable all students to enjoy every opportunity that Moorside High has to offer, allowing them to learn beneficial life skills and to be fully informed of their future academic choices.
